The Sussexes Leave the U.K. Because of Racism

Ever since their marriage, Prince Harry and Princess Megan Markle have been in the news for some or other reasons. But the latest reason became a shock to people as the couple decided to step down from their official duties and leave the U.K.

The Sussexes hinted at this decision when they decided to take a break from the official duties for six weeks and spend some quality family time together in the late months of 2019 (October).

By the start of the next year, rumors spread that the couple decided to step down, once and for all. The decision was made final by the March of 2020. The Prince and the Princess then went onto complete the remaining duties, and by 31st March 2020, the decision was announced on the official Instagram page to the Royal Family.

The real reason why they stepped down from their official duties was unknown until the couple showed up in an interview hosted by Oprah Winfrey. “Did you leave the country because of racism?” Oprah asked. “It was a large part of it.” was Harry’s answer.

The couple also added that soon after their son’s birth, there were discussions and concerns about the newborn child’s color. These discussions deeply hurt the Princess and influenced their decision to step down from the official duties.

Another reason why the couple decided to move out is because of the torturous scrutiny of Megan Markle by the Media. The media has always been keen to report the rifts that happen inside the royal family, and lately, many have targeted the young Duchess for no reason. some would go as far to say it’s harassment.

Later in the interview, Harry also pointed out that one of his fellow guests in the Sentebale Charity Fundraiser remarked that it was a bad idea to take on the media as the U.K. is a bigoted, prejudiced country. Harry corrected and said that it’s the press of the U.K. that is bigoted.

Years before, Princess Diana, the mother of Harry, also faced similar scrutiny by the media, and the Dutch made sure to hint about the same on the show. “What I was seeing was history repeating itself,” Harry added. But when it comes to Megan Markle, the situation worsens as the problem of race steps in.

Ever since their relationship was made public, the tabloid has been behind the Duchess for some gossips, and the element of racism was well evident in the reports that came in. As a Columbia civil rights attorney states, ones civil rights focus on fighting all violations of legal rights protected in the Constitution. The UK has a separate set of laws it abides by somewhat similar to the US constitution. The Duchess should not have to put up with the racism and allegations being made against her.

Summing up, it’s evident that the couple decided to leave the Royal life behind to avoid the media attacks faced by the Prince while they were on duty. The conditions worsened when members inside the family questioned the color of their unborn child.

At the end of the interview, the couple added that the media get away with all these accusations and are so blatant about it deeply hurt them. Numerous reasons may have aided their decision, but the prominent reasons are the racism and the scrutiny that the Princess had to face while in power.
